Travelers Auto Insurance Full Review
Travelers earned a stellar 5 out of 5 stars for overall performance, according to Smart Study Squard ratings. These ratings are meticulously determined by the Smart Study Squard editorial team using a scoring formula that considers consumer experience, complaint data from the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), and financial strength ratings.
Travelers is one of the most established and recognizable names in insurance. As one of the nation’s largest providers of auto insurance policies, Travelers is available in most states. If you’re looking to work with an agent and purchase multiple products from a single provider, Travelers might be the ideal choice for you.
Where Travelers Stands Out
Accident Forgiveness Qualifying drivers can choose from two accident forgiveness plans to avoid having their rates increase after an at-fault accident. This can be a significant advantage for drivers looking to maintain stable insurance costs even after an incident.
Coverage Options Travelers offers coverage options that many insurers don’t, such as gap insurance and premier new car replacement. These are particularly useful if you total a relatively new vehicle, ensuring you are financially covered.

Methodology
Insurer Complaints Methodology
Smart Study Squad analyzed complaints received by state insurance regulators and reported them to the NAIC from 2020-2022. The NAIC calculates a complaint index each year for each subsidiary, measuring its share of total complaints relative to its market share.
Smart Study Squad calculated a similar index, weighted by market shares, over the three years. This analysis was conducted independently and without NAIC endorsement.
Auto Insurance Ratings Methodology
Smart Study Squard ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, consumer complaints, and discounts. The “ease of use” category considers factors like website transparency and ease of filing a claim.
However, customer satisfaction surveys are also considered. These ratings serve as a guide, but shopping around and comparing quotes is recommended to find the best rate.
2024 Auto Insurance Survey Methodology
The survey of 7,514 adults was conducted online by Russell Research on behalf of Smart Study Squard in mid-2023. Respondents rated one auto insurance brand they used in the past 12 months on overall satisfaction, value, online experience, trustworthiness, mobile app experience, claims experience, and customer support.
Average Rates Methodology
Smart Study Squad averaged rates based on public filings obtained by Quadrant Information Services. Rates for people in all ZIP codes in the 50 states and Washington, D.C., were examined. Liberty Mutual was excluded due to a lack of publicly available information.
Sample drivers had the following coverage limits:
- $100,000 bodily injury liability per person.
- $300,000 bodily injury liability per crash.
- $50,000 property damage liability per crash.
- $100,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per person.
- $300,000 uninsured motorist bodily injury per crash.
- Collision coverage with $1,000 deductible.
- Comprehensive coverage with $1,000 deductible.
Rates varied by driver profiles, credit tiers, at-fault crashes, and DUIs. A 2020 Toyota Camry L was used in all cases with an assumed 12,000 annual miles driven. Rates were analyzed for drivers aged 20, 30, 35, 40, 50, 60, and 70.
